The perfect body - a question of definition

It is not surprising that we all strive for a perfect body, since we are bombarded from all sides with polished photo models who hold up an ideal for us to try to achieve. However, if we think more closely about the question of whether there is such a thing as a perfect body, we are forced to distinguish what kind of perfection we are talking about. On the one hand, there is undoubtedly the visually perfect body conveyed by the media, but on the other hand, there is the perfect body in the health sense, which does not necessarily look perfect, but functions flawlessly. Since the smooth functioning of the human body is difficult to grasp, we would like to deal with perfection in the optical sense within the framework of this article and answer the question of whether the perfect body exists.

Symmetry as the key to the stereotypical ideal

The assumption that perfect bodies exist stems from evolutionary biology, which has in the past addressed the question of what influence a person's physical appearance has on their attractiveness as a sexual partner. Numerous studies have shown that certain characteristics, such as facial symmetry, have a measurable influence on perceived attractiveness. In particular, the aspect of symmetry can also be applied to other parts of the body. The media industry takes advantage of this attractiveness, which is above average in a scientific sense, by primarily presenting people who correspond to this primeval ideal. In addition, the visual projection is often underpinned by statements suggesting that anyone can achieve such a supposedly perfect body as long as they work hard enough at it. To a certain extent, this also corresponds to reality, because through targeted training we can of course influence our proportions. However, what mostly falls under the table is the fact that our DNA limits our scope of action and we are required to work with what is available to us. A small example: Aren't you surprised that the men in fashion catalogs seem to have a perfectly symmetrical six-pack without exception? This distorted image is created solely by the fact that only men who meet this criterion are selected. Those with an asymmetrical tendon structure or a hard-core defined four-pack are deliberately not selected, because it contradicts the ideal transported by the media and can therefore be marketed less well.

Deliberate deception with technical means

Another aspect that plays a leading role in the search for the perfect body, especially in relation to the media landscape, is the deliberate manipulation of images. If we are honest, we all know that there is hardly a person who looks as perfect as they appear on magazine covers or in music videos. Photoshop and other image editing programs help media professionals to remove even the smallest wrinkles and pigment spots from stars and models. The illusion of perfection created in this way is not produced out of malice on the part of the media, however, but rather arises from society's overall striving for eternal youth and flawlessness. It goes without saying that this is a vicious circle that keeps rekindling itself and is therefore difficult to overcome. In the sense of reason, therefore, it would be much to accept the diversity of life and simply and to exploit the existing conditions as well as possible, instead of running after an unattainable statistical ideal. Be also aware of the fact that the preferences of people are just as diverse as the number of different body characteristics. In plain language, this means nothing more than that there can be no such thing as a perfect body beyond all doubt.

Conclusion

As you can see, perfection is nothing more than a pure matter of definition, which can vary from person to person and therefore does not necessarily correspond to the ideal transported by the media. So don't waste energy on the wrong paths, but exploit the potential that you personally have been given in your cradle, in order to develop your individual perfection to reach.
