In recent years Yohimbe or its active ingredient Yohimbine (English: Yohimbine) has been the subject of heated debate among fitness enthusiasts and industry insiders alike. In the beginning, it was advertised as an ordinary supplement to support fat loss, because the active ingredient was said at the time to increase testosterone levels. This subsequently turned out to be a mistake, which is why the Yohimbe fat burner was already dismissed as a flop. At the same time, a small cult developed, particularly among men, as some people had experienced increased sexuality when taking Yohimbe. For this reason, Yohimbe was already being touted as an alternative to Viagra and was mainly used in the production of aphrodisiacs for the gentlemen of creation. Yohimbe tea is particularly popular and is often touted as a kind of magic potion for men.
In addition to these two factors, another interesting rumor about yohimbine caused a stir in the fitness world. Some manufacturers claimed that the active ingredient could help to get rid of the "stubborn" fat in the middle of the body, which is increasingly stored in the waist and stomach in men and mainly in the buttocks and thighs in women. With all the rumors surrounding this product and its supposedly unique effects on the biggest enemy of fitness athletes, it's worth taking a closer look at the facts to shed some light on the subject.
What is yohimbine and where exactly does it come from?
The Yohimbe (scientifically: Pausinystalia Yohimbe) is an evergreen tree that is mainly native to the African tropical region in the Congo and Cameroon and belongs to the genus of the reddish plants. Contrary to the assumption that it is rather small in stature, it can grow up to 30 meters high. In addition to several other indole alkaloids, the yohimbe bark contains around 0.5 to 1.5 of the active ingredient yohimbine. Another or alternative source is several snake root species of the genus "Rauwolfia".
What does yohimbine do in the body?
From a medicinal point of view, the yohimbe powder obtained from the bark has several functions.
These are the three most important:
- On the one hand, it is an antioxidant. Yohimbine dilates the blood vessels and can have a positive effect on male genital function and libido in both sexes.
- The indole alkaloid increases the activity of your sympathetic nervous system and acts like an MAO inhibitor, which are used in medicine as anti-depressants, among other things. MAO stands for the enzyme "monoamine oxidase", which is responsible for the breakdown of the following hormones, among other things:
- the neurotransmitters dopamine and noradrenaline: act as messengers for the exchange of information between the brain cells and are mainly responsible for your ability to perceive and concentrate
- the happiness hormone serotonin: improves your mood
- the stress hormone adrenaline or epinephrine: the most powerful fat burner in the human body, which stimulates the beta receptors responsible for breaking up fat cells
- Thanks to this ability, yohimbine can boost your metabolism and have a direct positive effect on fat burning. However, this is only a side effect.
- As a fitness athlete, another property is even more important. Yohimbine is a presynaptic alpha-2-adrenergic blocking agent, also known as an alpha-2-adrenergic antagonist.
Yohimbe Fatburner as a specialist in the fight against stubborn fat in problem areas
The alpha-2 receptors work like bouncers and protect the contents of the fat cells. Unfortunately, most of them are located in the problem areas (stomach, chest, buttocks and thighs). This has dramatic consequences. The fatty acids that are so well protected do not take part in the metabolism. It is therefore possible that your love handles contain fat that is already years or decades old.
It is very easy to recognize. Fresh fat, which your body extracts from the nutrients in your food, is transparent to whitish in color. Old fat, on the other hand, tends to be yellowish and is specifically removed during liposuction.
You don't have to go under the knife, nor do you have to starve yourself to such an extent that even the strong-willed alpha-2 receptors give in. You can achieve success much more easily with yohimbine. It increases the concentration of catecholamines (including noradrenaline and adrenaline) and attaches itself to the alpha-2 receptors, which inhibit lipolysis (release of fatty acids). The intake of Yohimbe alone is of course not enough. Without sufficient production of adrenaline and noradrenaline through exercise, no results are possible.
Concluding words on the Yohimbe experience regarding side effects
For centuries, people in the tropical regions of Africa have been using yohimbe powder to treat erectile dysfunction in men. The vasodilatation described has a particular effect on the extremities and genitals, where it improves blood flow.
The active ingredient interferes with your central nervous system. That sounds dramatic. In reality, this is the case with many medications. This is the only way to get results. Normally, side effects do not occur. The basic requirement is the same for everything. You need to know your body. If in doubt, you can consult a doctor, who will most likely allow you to take it.
Yohimbe is well tolerated and only leads to complications in exceptional situations and with the wrong dosage. The latter is always the case. If you take too many paracetamol headache tablets, for example, you expose yourself to a considerably greater risk. If you stick to the Yohimbe dosage, you are on the safe side.
