Word of the fitness trend has of course spread to every last corner of the food industry, not least due to the fact that convenience products are selling increasingly poorly. Consequently, light and diet products with reduced sugar, fat or salt content are booming. At this point, however, you should be particularly wary and not fall for the manufacturers' promises, because the devil is always in the detail, especially as the taste of the products has to be maintained by other measures. The bottom line is that light products are not necessarily healthier than conventional products, so it is essential to take a look at the label. In the following, we would like to look at some particularly popular product variants, the light versions of which often have a lot to offer.
1 - Fat-free yogurt
Fat-free yogurts seem like a free ride to many, because compared to conventional variants, they contain significantly fewer calories and no bad fat. However, only very few people know that these products can still significantly hinder your diet progress. On the one hand, they contain no fat, but on the other hand they contain all the more sugar to make up for the taste component. But that's not all, because in order to achieve the consistency and flavor of normal yogurt, many manufacturers also use thickeners and other additives that have no place in a healthy diet.
2 - Diet lemonade
Diet sodas are actually almost calorie-free, which prompts many dieters to drink huge amounts of them to quench their thirst for something sweet. Even if there is not much to be said against these light drinks from a calorie point of view, they are packed to the rafters with chemicals that can cause unpleasant side effects such as bloating or headaches. In correspondingly high doses and assuming long-term consumption, some substances can also have serious health consequences.
3 - Low-fat ice cream
Low-fat ice cream has similar problems to fat-free yogurt. Of course, it also contains less fat, but this is again replaced by larger amounts of sugar, such as corn syrup. Of course, the lower fat content also tempts you to eat significantly more ice cream than is good for your calorie balance.
4 - Fruit drinks
Many fruit juices and fruit juice drinks are emblazoned with the slogan "made from real fruit". However, this message does not necessarily mean what you think it means, because it only means that real fruit has been used, but you can only see the extent to which this is true by looking at the label. Under certain circumstances, a superficially healthy fruit juice may conceal a cocktail of corn syrup, dextrose and a never-ending range of flavor enhancers bursting with industrial sugar. So if you absolutely have to reach for fruit juices, read the label and make sure that only fruit has been used.
Conclusion
What is all this supposed to tell us now? Eat natural foods and stay away from processed products, no matter how good they promise to be for your diet. This is the only way to have full control over which nutrients enter your body.
