After all, iron plays an important role in the proper functioning of the immune system and is indispensable for the production of red blood cells and thus also for the transport of oxygen. Nevertheless, many women in particular suffer from an iron deficiency, which can be compensated for with a high-quality iron supplement.
That is why women need especially much iron
Iron is an elementary component of our blood. As a result, women in particular are at a significantly increased risk of iron deficiency. The background to this is menstruation, during which every woman loses between 5 and 80 milliliters of blood with each bleed. This corresponds to an iron loss of 2.5 to 40 milligrams.
Younger women during the first years of menstruation and women during menopause are particularly affected. Iron supply is also a problem for pregnant women, because the increase in blood volume to supply the child means that the body also needs additional iron. The bottom line is that women of childbearing age in particular need significantly more iron than men.
How much iron do I need?
Basically, the more pronounced the menstrual period, the higher the iron requirement. On average, women need 14.8 milligrams of iron per day. By comparison, men need only 8.7 milligrams. The requirement is even higher for pregnant women and nursing mothers.
The German Nutrition Society (DGE) recommends 30 milligrams for pregnant women and 20 milligrams for nursing mothers. Adequate iron intake is particularly important for vegetarians and vegans.
